Host a Back to School Tea Party

Printer-friendly version

Hosting a back to school tea party to bring children back together before school starts, or to strengthen bonds with new friends is a great idea. Not only is it a wonderful chance for children to get together and create memories, it’s also a sneaky way to enforce some table manners.

Table

The table is the center of attention and the main attraction, which is nice in a way, because all of your decorating attention can be focused on one thing and if you’ve got the time and inclination you can really create a masterpiece. Just remember the most important part is the tea service, so a tea pot, saucers and cups are essential.

Treats

Many children don’t like actual tea so you may want to replace the tea with juice. You’ll also want to have some little treats for them to nibble on.

Cookies are usually a perfect tea party treat; try making flower shaped sugar cookies and let the kids decorate their own cookie with frosting and colored sprinkles.

For a more substantial meal, create little tea sandwiches with the crusts cut off and cut into tiny pieces. Make sure there’s enough to go around, kids love the little sandwich.

For a take-away treat buy flat suckers and petal colored construction paper. Cut out flower shapes and tape them to the back of the suckers, making the sucker the center, and the handle the stem.

Activities

Find some old clothes that seem like dress-up clothing and create a box for each child, or separate boxes for each type of clothing, and let the kids dress up before the tea party. You can even make it a race to see who can get dressed the fastest.
